What is Call Bridge?
A popular card game in South Asia
Call Bridge is a card game that originated in South Asia, and is widely played in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal. It is also known as Spades or Call Break in some regions. A trick-taking game with spades as trumps
Call Bridge is a trick-taking game, which means that each round consists of four cards played by each player, one at a time, following the suit of the first card played. The player who plays the highest card of the same suit as the first card wins the trick. However, spades are always trumps in this game, which means that any spade card can beat any other card of any other suit. The cards are ranked from high to low as follows: A-K-Q-J-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2.
A game of bidding and scoring
Before each round of play, there is a bidding round, where each player has to call a number from 2 to 12, indicating how many tricks they think they can win in that round. The player who bids the highest number becomes the declarer, and has to win at least that many tricks to score points. If the declarer succeeds, they score points equal to their bid. If they fail, they lose points equal to their bid. The other players score one point for each trick they win. Bids of 8 or more are called bonus bids, and they have special rules for scoring.
How to play Call Bridge?
The setup and the card ranking
To play Call Bridge, you need a standard 52-card deck and a way to keep score. You also need four players who sit around a table in a square formation. The dealer is chosen randomly and deals 13 cards to each player, one at a time, counterclockwise. The players then pick up their cards and arrange them according to suits and ranks. As mentioned before, the cards are ranked from high to low as follows: A-K-Q-J-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2.
The bidding round and the contract
The bidding round starts with the player on the right of the dealer and proceeds counterclockwise. Each player has to call a number from 2 to 12, indicating how many tricks they think they can win in that round. They can call any number they want, regardless of what the previous players have called. They can also pass if they don't want to bid at all. The bidding round ends when three players in a row pass. The last player who called a number becomes the declarer, and their bid becomes the contract. The declarer has to win at least that many tricks to score points. If the declarer passes, the contract is set to 2 by default.
The card play and the scoring
The card play starts with the declarer, who leads any card they want. The other players have to follow suit if they can, otherwise they can play any card. The player who plays the highest card of the same suit as the first card wins the trick, unless a spade is played, in which case the highest spade wins. The winner of the trick leads the next card, and so on, until all 13 tricks are played. The scoring is done as follows:
If the declarer succeeds in winning at least as many tricks as their bid, they score points equal to their bid.
If the declarer fails to win at least as many tricks as their bid, they lose points equal to their bid.
If the declarer bids 8 or more, they score double points if they succeed, and lose double points if they fail.
If the declarer bids 12, they score triple points if they succeed, and lose triple points if they fail.
The other players score one point for each trick they win.
The dealer then passes to the next player on the right, and a new round begins. The game ends after 12 rounds, and the player with the highest score wins.
