I used to think "full-service storage with pickup" was just a lazy-tax, until I tried doing it the cheap way.
Option 1 was the classic self-storage route. I rented a small unit in Al Quoz, borrowed a friend's pickup, and spent a Saturday hauling boxes in 40C heat. Between fuel, Salik, buying a decent padlock, and the inevitable second trip because you always underestimate, it was a full day gone. If you are young, free on weekends, and only storing a few things, it can still make sense.
Option 2 was full-service storage with pickup. I did it last year when we moved from a Marina 2-bed to a smaller place in JLT, and I did not have the time or the back for it. The guys came, wrapped the furniture properly (not just cling film), took inventory, and loaded everything fast. I used household storage Dubai after a neighbor recommended them, mainly because they were clear about timings and what counts as "pickup" (some companies charge per floor).
What made it "worth it" for me:* No truck rental, no loading, no arguing with building security about elevator bookings* Faster move-out, which matters if your landlord is doing a snag list* Less damage, my dining chairs survived without scratches
I also listed a bunch of stuff we did not need on Dubizzle first, so I stored less and paid less.
My verdict: if you are moving, renovating, or storing anything fragile, pickup service is worth it. For just a few boxes, DIY is fine.
