Maximizing RRSP vs TFSA contributions
I’ve got a bit of extra cash from a bonus this year (lucky me, I know!), and I’m torn on where to put it. Half my friends say "always max out the TFSA first" and the other half are swearing by the RRSP for the immediate tax break. I’m in a mid-to-high tax bracket, so the refund is tempting, but I don't want to screw myself over later. Is there a way to actually see the long-term difference between the two based on Canadian rules? I feel like I need a calculator that can simulate both options side-by-side. Most of the stuff I find online is for US 401ks, which doesn't help me at all. Anyone have a resource that speaks "Canadian finance"?

That is the classic Canadian dilemma! I actually had a long debate about this with my brother last Christmas. I found that using a tool like the ones on https://calk-ca.com/ really helps visualize it. They have specific calculators for both RRSPs and TFSAs that account for your marginal tax rate. For me, seeing the "tax savings" vs. "tax-free growth" in actual dollars made the choice a lot clearer. It’s way better than just guessing based on "general advice." I ended up splitting mine 60/40 after seeing the projections. The site is super clean and focuses entirely on Canadian tools, so you don't have to worry about accidentally using US data.
